Best of Netflix
Something I really love about autumn is curling up on the sofa when the weather is far from lovely, watching a really good series on Netflix, and not feeling guilty that you should be out enjoying the sunshine. After a busy last week I’ve been feeling the need for recharging time at home and found that a quiet evening or two does the world of good. We are spoilt for choice these days in terms of amazing shows – remember the time when you used to turn on the tv and watch whatever crap was on? We don’t own a television now and I don’t watch a huge amount so when I do sit down to Netflix I want it to be really good!
There is so much choice out there that it can be a little overwhelming so I thought I’d share some of my favourite shows from the past few years for you to add to your to-watch list! I asked about UK Netflix recommendations recently on Instagram and people had lots of suggestions, but please leave your favourites in the comments too!
Top of the Lake
I watched this not long after getting back from New Zealand and so it made me really nostalgic for the lakes and mountains. But seriously, the scenery is just stunning. It’s about a detective (Elizabeth Moss of Mad Men – she’s amazing) trying to get to the bottom of the disappearance of a very young pregnant teenager. It’s got that mysterious small town theme to it. I’m really keen to watch the next season, which came out this year.
Luther
Based in London, each episode follows murder detective Luther try and solve a case. It’s really thrilling and quite dark, I loved it!
Black Mirror
I’m sure you’ve heard about this one, but it’s great for dipping in and out of as each episode is self-contained. They are amazing and terrifying at the same time – each one is a story on the theme of modern technology with a bit of a sinister undertone.
Better Call Saul
I put this here presuming you’ve watched Breaking Bad (if you haven’t, what are you doing, go and watch it now) as this is the prequel. It took a while for me to get into it but in the end I think it’s almost as good as Breaking Bad, and that’s saying something. It follows Saul’s life and dodgy lawyer career prior to Breaking Bad and really delves into the characters.
Love
This is the most light hearted show here and as each episode is only half an hour long, it’s really easy to watch. The characters are really quirky and loveable, and it’s a great feel-good romantic comedy. I really hope they bring out more seasons!
Orange is the New Black
I read the book when I was travelling in Asia and loved it, but the series is amazing too! The characters in the prison are just the best, and my favourite parts are when they delve back into their previous lives and how they ended up in jail.
The Fall
This is another dark detective story following a mass murderer in Ireland. It’s quite horrible but really gripping, and Gillian Anderson is amazing as the detective. Also Jamie Dornan is just beautiful ha! This one isn’t actually on Netflix but if you can track it down somewhere, it’s definitely worth a watch.
What are you watching at the moment? I started Riverdale the other day – I’m only one episode in but I’m enjoying it so far, in a high school drama kind of way! Also very excited for Stranger Things II coming up – did you watch the last one?
